What is an optical mask

A structure in which various functional patterns are fabricated and precisely positioned on a film, plastic or glass substrate for selective exposure of a photoresist coating, known as a lithography reticle.
The fabrication process of semiconductor integrated circuits usually requires multiple photolithography processes to dig various doping windows, electrode contact holes on the dielectric layer on the surface of the semiconductor crystal, or etch metal interconnect patterns on the conductive layer. The photolithography process requires a complete set of photocopying masking stencils with specific geometries that can be accurately registered with each other (several pieces to as many as a dozen pieces).

- The photomask is a high-precision version with microcircuits engraved on it. It is made of a quartz plate or glass plate with a flat surface and a layer of chromium. The residual chromium part after etching is the designed microelectrogram. This method of plate making is called light transmission in the mask industry.
